Know more about Otoplasty
Some people are born with an exaggerated projection of the pinna, also known as floppy ears. This problem can be corrected by reshaping the cartilage through otoplasty, which will outline a normal ear.
Performed under local anesthesia, the surgical correction of protruding ears allows the patient to quickly return to their normal activities.
The ideal age to undergo an otoplasty procedure is 7 years, during which the ear is fully formed and almost equal to the size reached in adulthood. Moreover, because it is a pre-school era, this phase usually involves psychological issues.
Otoplasty aims to correct protruding ears.
Children: general anesthesia. Adults: local anesthesia with or without sedation (the criteria).
Does otoplasty surgery leave scars?
The scar from otoplasty is practically invisible, located behind the ear. Moreover, as it is a region of very thin skin, the scar tends to be “almost imperceptible”, even when techniques are used involving small incisions on the anterior side.
Generally, the surgical correction of protruding ears lasts around 90 to 120 minutes. However, the time of surgery should not be confused with the length of a patient’s stay in the operating room environment. This includes the period of preparation for anesthesia and postoperative recovery. Your doctor will inform you about the total time.
Length of hospital stay
Half a day, depending on the type of anesthesia used and the patient’s age.
The patient can resume their professional activities or school in 4 to 5 days after otoplasty. In the first week, one should use a headband for 24 hours. After this period, you must use it only at bedtime for one month.
Once the dressing is removed we will have around 80% of the desired result. After 12 weeks, the result is final.

Is there postoperative pain?
Some annoyance may occur during the otoplasty postoperative. When there is pain, we can fight it with common analgesics.
How is the dressing?
The dressings protect the scars with small bandages. They protect the ear (especially in children). During the first few days, protection is made with a cap like protection in order to avoid local trauma. In some cases, it is recommended to use a type of “ballet” or “tennis” wraps.
When are the stitches removed? Is there pain?
Around the 8th day. There is no pain when the stitches are removed.
Can the ears run the risk of protruding again after the surgery is complete?
If the surgery for correction of protruding ears is performed correctly, the results are final. It should be noted that a slight asymmetry may occur, because even people who have not been operated on, with normal ears show no absolute symmetry.
Is the operation dangerous?
The danger is not greater or smaller than traveling by plane or car or even simply crossing a public road. There are risks of everyday life, which we are accustomed to facing.
Recommendations on Ear Surgery:
– Communicate with your doctor until the day before surgery in case of flu, infections, etc.;
– Comply with the established schedule for admission;
– Be sure to fast for a period of 8 to 12 hours before surgery;
– Wash your hair in the evening;
– If you have long hair, it should not be cut, but held up for a period after the surgery. This helps to disguise the dressing in the early days.
– Avoid the sun, wind and local trauma over a period of 10 days;
– Attend the clinic for postoperative control on the days indicated by the nurse;
– Obey the prescription;
– Eat freely from the second day on, mainly on proteins (meat, milk, eggs) and vitamins (fruits).
